Making a life
with nature and
new technologies

Instagramming your weekend at the cottage. Meditating with a mobile app. Our modern lives are increasingly marked by a tension between connection and disconnection—between new technologies and nature.

In Green Screen, the inaugural issue of our new BESIDE Journals collection, we cast a curious, comical, and commonsense gaze on this new reality.

Here you’ll get a taste of the print issue, as well as some online, audio, and interactive extras—to add some extra spice to your Summer 2019!

JESSICA: I am replying to your 🙂 with another 🙂 to express the enjoyment I’m feeling.

ELLEN: I received your 🙂 in response to mine. The enjoyment you felt came through loud and clear, and brought me a level of enjoyment that I imagine was similar to that which you experienced. I’m replying with the same 🙂 yet again.

J: Your second 🙂 brought additional enjoyment to me. While I considered simply sending you another 🙂 I grew concerned that this particular expression no longer accurately depicted the extent of playfulness I’m now feeling. So, instead, I’m sending you a 😜.

E: I enjoyed your 😜 and found it to be both humorous and whimsical. Incidentally, these are also qualities that I admire in you as a person. I’m sending you a 😘 in the hope that this feeling comes across. My secondary hope is that this conclusively punctuates our conversation and frees us to attend to other aspects of our lives.
